Birds At The Waiwhakaio River Mouth

Birds At The Waiwhakaio River Mouth

One of the best places to see a variety of birds in New Plymouth is the Waiwhakaio river mouth.  As well as waders, shags and sea birds there is nearly always a good variety of small birds around in the tussock and scrub including silvereye, gold finch, green finch, dunnock, yellow hammer and skylarks.  On saturday morning I headed down there again get some more shots with my new nikor 500mm lense.

One of my first shots of the morning, a black shag (kawau), lifting off from the water.

A silvereye or tauhou on a flax seed head.

A pied stilt or poaka, doing a fly by.

This is two photos of the same goldfinch, superimposed to capture the action as it took off from the lupins.

A dunnock in the box thorn

White fronted tern landing amongst the foreshore rocks. Terns are a fairly rare sight along the New Plymouth coast so it was a bit of a thrill when this small flock of a dozen birds came in to land.

A juvenile tern demanding attention from its parents.
